About Wieners

What are wieners made from?
We use only federally inspected meats – beef, pork and chicken, depending on the variety of the wiener.

Are there meat by-products in wieners?
We do not use any meat by-products in our wieners.

How many wieners does Schneider Foods produce each year?
Schneider Foods produces over 1 million pounds of wieners each week for Canadians to enjoy. In fact, over eight Schneiders wieners are eaten every second in Canada.

What makes wieners red in colour?
The inside wiener colour is a result of the type of meat used and the type of cooking process.
For example:

  • Beef is darker than chicken
  • In the cooking process, if more steam is used the wiener is lighter
  • If a smoking process is used it may be darker on the outside.
  • Ingredients used in curing also make meat pinker in colour.

What is the trim in wieners?
Trim is smaller side cuts of meat trimmed away from larger roast-type cuts. They are whole meats, not 'mystery' meats, and are labelled in Canada as pork, beef, turkey or chicken. The term does not refer to organ meats or by-products.

What makes some wieners fat free?
Our fat free wieners are made with very lean meats, carefully trimmed to remove all visible fat. In most cases, we prefer to use very lean chicken and pork to make our fat free products. We do not use cereals to make our products fat free.
